For the past three decades Parkett has worked hand in hand with the most compelling artists and authors of our time in order to bring them to a wider public. With the special summer issue 100/101, the publishers have decided to bring the publication of the printed art magazine to a close. Parkett volumes and editions will remain fully documented online and available via its book distributors. New, expanded Parkett exhibitions in various museums are in preparation as well, and will further explore the publication's singular approach as a 33 year time capsule and archive of contemporary art. This final issue will retrace the energies and ideas that inspired and underpinned Parkett and the special editions and works created by some 260 collaborating artists during the past 33 years. Collaborating artists will include Nairy Baghramian, Nicolas Party, Jordan Wolfson, Maurizio Cattelan, Marlene Dumas, Katharina Fritsch, Katharina Grosse, Marilyn Minter, Jean-Luc Mylayne, and Pipilotti Rist, among others. In interviews, conversations, and essays, Parkett Vol. 100/101 will highlight the major changes and events that have shaped this expansive epoch. It will be an occasion to take a clear-sighted look at the past, the present, and the future

As radiant with promise as the water appears on the cover, as curious is its effect on the drifting boat.The scene is of a theatrical artificiality: the cavernlike space imparts a sense of security and creates the magic of a blue grotto, yet also implies, however faintly, the possibility of being trapped.
It seems as though the navigation of uncharted waters is the force driving not only the rowers on the cover, but also the three artists in this issue:Yang Fudong, Julie Mehretu, and Lucy McKenzie. They probe a world in flux, trawling for ideas that have yet to take shape and plumbing the depths of conflicting desires. Their inquiry into fundamental and familiar questions of cultural, intellectual and artistic identity produces startling results.
The picture of the boat stems from the work of Yang Fudong, who creates films full of suspended and condensed moments, in which joy, sorrow, and hope seem merely to confirm the conviction that the artifice of art is truer than life.
The objectives that inform the abstraction of Julie Mehretu’s images are demonstrated by the words of the writer Chris Abani: “When Julie says, ‘I am interested in the multi-faceted layers of place, space, and time that impact the formation of personal and communal identity,’ does she mean that she wants to explore the melancholic discontent of displacement? Or the displacement of melancholic discontent?”
Lucy McKenzie directs our attention to a social life peopled by her circle of friends, public figures like Brian Eno, Brian Ferry, and women artists of the past century’s avant-garde. Art and culture, a commitment to ideas, the study and weighing of present and past ideals as, for instance, Socialist Realism, inform her artistic investigations. In Tintin, she has found a figure whose contours make room for all kinds of personal concerns as well as such categories as purity, impurity, disruption, vigor, and cheery hopefulness.
Steven Shearer’s Insert also relies on a formal vocabulary that targets the context of historically defined associations. Febrile dimensions, couched in the coloring of subcultural motifs, yield a surrealist continuum that hints at the disturbing potential of eternally valid essences.
Koo Jeong-A’s design of the Parkett spine in the next three issues displays a clarity that will prove deceptive. It occurs to one that she might be making an appeal to a community, to “us,” us readers and artists, in fact, all of us on this planet: wondering if ...

The tension generated by the “old newspaper” on the cover derives from several contrasting associations. Someone may have thoughtfully made a personal cover for Parkett: a newspaper that proverbially lasts but a single day protectively wrapped around an art publication to preserve its so-called claim to eternity. Who were the readers of this daily newspaper, which is obviously older than Parkett and once targeted non-white readers? Newspapers stand for reality. Yet no matter how low-key Ellen Gallagher’s interventions may be, they counter images of relentlessly determined existence with a world that is both playful and fantastic.
Paul McCarthy’s art banks on brawn, excess, outbursts and sweeping spatial and mental dimensions, incorporating everything from the conventional image of humanity to his own ego and mythological figures. Here he has so thoroughly revamped the usual question and answer format of his interview with Jeremy Sigler that it is beyond legibility. And as in the modified newspaper, the resulting image makes new demands on readers.
The words ‘interview’ and ‘newspaper’ also loom large in the work of Anri Sala, the third Collaboration ar tist in this issue of Parkett. In 2003, Sala published a book titled Thousand Windows – The World of the Insane. It contains photos that the then 18-year-old ar tist took in 1991 of the untold newspapers that sprang up after the fall of the socialist régime as well as the improvised newsstands where they were sold on the streets of Tirana. The book takes its title from two such newspapers. In her conversation with Anri Sala, Lynne Cooke inquires about another well-known work, INTERVISTA – FINDING THE WORDS (1998), and hence the essence of Sala’s ar tistic concerns: “The strand that I’m tracing in your works has to do not only with actual silence but, more often, with not speaking or not being able to speak, or speaking via conduits or other channels.”
In his Insert, Matthew Brannon also takes what might be called a meta-look at printed matter. The ar tist as collector traces the contours of human fear in contemporary civilization in his prosaic lineup of movie posters. Their telling slogans and compact visual language speak volumes, covering territory that ranges from Schopenhauer to Freud and cogently illustrating a truism of journalism: Unhappiness is a more easily accessible experience than that of happiness. “We are threatened with suffering from three directions: from our own body, which is doomed to decay and dissolution and which cannot even do without pain and anxiety as warning signals; from the external world, which may rage against us with overwhelming and merciless forces of destruction; and finally from our relations to other men.” (Sigmund Freud)

The tension generated by the “old newspaper” on the cover derives from several contrasting associations. Someone may have thoughtfully made a personal cover for Parkett: a newspaper that proverbially lasts but a single day protectively wrapped around an art publication to preserve its so-called claim to eternity. Who were the readers of this daily newspaper, which is obviously older than Parkett and once targeted non-white readers? Newspapers stand for reality. Yet no matter how low-key Ellen Gallagher’s interventions may be, they counter images of relentlessly determined existence with a world that is both playful and fantastic.
Paul McCarthy’s art banks on brawn, excess, outbursts and sweeping spatial and mental dimensions, incorporating everything from the conventional image of humanity to his own ego and mythological figures. Here he has so thoroughly revamped the usual question and answer format of his interview with Jeremy Sigler that it is beyond legibility. And as in the modified newspaper, the resulting image makes new demands on readers.
The words ‘interview’ and ‘newspaper’ also loom large in the work of Anri Sala, the third Collaboration ar tist in this issue of Parkett. In 2003, Sala published a book titled Thousand Windows – The World of the Insane. It contains photos that the then 18-year-old ar tist took in 1991 of the untold newspapers that sprang up after the fall of the socialist régime as well as the improvised newsstands where they were sold on the streets of Tirana. The book takes its title from two such newspapers. In her conversation with Anri Sala, Lynne Cooke inquires about another well-known work, INTERVISTA – FINDING THE WORDS (1998), and hence the essence of Sala’s ar tistic concerns: “The strand that I’m tracing in your works has to do not only with actual silence but, more often, with not speaking or not being able to speak, or speaking via conduits or other channels.”
In his Insert, Matthew Brannon also takes what might be called a meta-look at printed matter. The ar tist as collector traces the contours of human fear in contemporary civilization in his prosaic lineup of movie posters. Their telling slogans and compact visual language speak volumes, covering territory that ranges from Schopenhauer to Freud and cogently illustrating a truism of journalism: Unhappiness is a more easily accessible experience than that of happiness. “We are threatened with suffering from three directions: from our own body, which is doomed to decay and dissolution and which cannot even do without pain and anxiety as warning signals; from the external world, which may rage against us with overwhelming and merciless forces of destruction; and finally from our relations to other men.” (Sigmund Freud)
